Chuchuhuasi

Chuchuhuasi (Maytenus krukovit) is a large canopy tree of the Amazon rainforest. The bark of the chuchuhuasi tree is a well-known traditional medicine in western Amazonia. Its name locally means “trembling back,” reflecting its use for treating back pain, arthritis, and rheumatism . It is an effective pain reliever as well as a muscle relaxant. It is most commonly used to treat rheumatism, arthritis, tuberculosis, bronchitis, stomach ache, and fortification of the immune system. It is effective in breaking up and dispersing lactic acid. It is believed to enhance virility. For its libido benefits, the plant is traditionally prepared as an alcohol tincture, but makes a wonderfully full-bodied tea that tastes great.
Pharmacological Information
Research has shown that the bark provides nutritional support for the maintenance of healthy connective tissue, joints, and protective activity against the damaging effects of free radicals. Results form preclinical studies by American, Italian, and Japanese researches have documented increased phagocytosis, anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities, antitumor activities against different tumor cell lines, and alkaloids that inhibit enzyme production of protein kinase C, an enzyme involved in arthritis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, brain tumors, and cancer.

Phytochemicals
Chuchuhausi contains powerful phytochemicals, including triterpenes, favonols, and sesquiterpene alkaloids. Two beneficial phytochemicals in chuchuhuasi include mayteine and maytansine, alkaloids documented since the 1960s with antitumor activitity. Other antitumaor chemicals have been identified include tingenone, pristimerin, and macrocarpins. Other documented components include dammarane- and friedelane-type triterpenes.
