Iporuru

Iporuro (Alchomea castaneifolia) is a medium sized tree that grows in the lower elevations and flood plains of the Peruvian Amazon and adjacent tropical countries. It grows on low-lying plains that become swamps during the rainy season. It is harvested only during the dry season, when its medically active constituents are present. Its leaves, bark, and roots are widely used among Peruvians to relieve arthritis, rheumatism, and other joint problems. It is recognized for its effectiveness to support muscle and joint structure. Tribal healers report analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties as they used iporuru topically on painful joints. It is also widely used as an effective aphrodisiac and geriatric tonic for males. Throughout Peru it is used as a remedy for impotency as well as for reducing blood sugar in diabetics. In addition, locals prepare the leaves into a decoction for coughs. One to two grams of powdered leaves in capsules or steeped as tea are taken two or three times daily.

Pharmacological Information

There has been little clinical research performed on iporuru, but initial investigations support traditional uses for joint and muscle health. An ethanol extract of the stembark, applied topically, was capable of reducing lab-induced swelling and inflammation in rats. This research also indicated that the extract able to inhibit COX-1 prostaglandin synthesis. Prostaglandins, produced by the activity of the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX), are linked to inflammatory processes and diseases. COX-inhibitors are a newer class of anti-inflammatory and arthritis pharmaceutical drugs on the market. Prostaglandin inhibition activity may, in part, explain the traditional use of iporuru for inflammatory joint and muscle disorders. Other research in the U.S. has confirmed anti-inflamatory effects on mice.

One study in Argentina found that an extract of iporuru had antibacterial effects and was effective against penicillin-G-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Aspergillus niger.
